Effective employee communications is the
lynch pin to any project’s success. Quite simply,
if employees or plan members don’t know about it,
care about it or understand it, you won’t meet your
goals. Associates & Wilson believes communications is
about more than words on paper. It is necessary
to understand the unique needs and circumstances of your
audience, as well as what you’re trying to accomplish
(inform, change behavior, motivate, reinforce, etc.). How,
when and why you communicate, is just as important as the
actual message. That’s why any communications project
with Associates & Wilson begins with understanding the
audience and your goals.
However, the words you choose
to use are very important. The benefits industry –
with summary plan descriptions pulled directly from incomprehensible
insurance contracts – has a history of and reputation
for poor communications. Some have come a long way in improving
their materials, while others have gone too far and provide
sketchy descriptions that do not meet ERISA legal requirements,
leaving employers at risk. We know how to use clear, precise
and easy to understand language – even if the topic
is quite technical or complicated. Our specialty is translating
difficult materials without changing meaning or leaving
out critical concepts that leave you exposed to lawsuits
or unintentionally expanding coverage.
Beyond the words is the medium
of communications. In recent years, the array of choice
has expanded well beyond the customary printed brochure
- to print on demand, e-mail, web sites, interactive web
sites, interactive voice response (IVR), etc. We can help
you navigate through these many options to most efficiently
meet your needs.
